Mm. I distinctly remember discovering pomegranate when I lived in Bloomington. So that would be anywhere from ages 4-8, although I suspect it was around age 6...? Anyway. It wasn't even our pomegranate; I think our neighbors across the hallway had a pomegranate, and I was over at their place, and ate some and was amazed. Because, you know, a pomegranate is pretty different from any other fruit we typically eat in the U.S. Anyway. I remember trying to explain the fruit to my dad or mom later on, and actually succeeding! I was quite surprised and happy with myself that I managed to communicate a picture of an object in my mind that didn't have a name to it. Of course, I learned the Chinese name for pomegranate first, and later discovered its English name. Oh and yes, I loved pomegranate from then on.
I don't remember when I first discovered grapefruit. It was more likely than not introduced to me by my parents or other relatives, because my parents fed me orange pieces when I was younger....I think. So I was already familiar with that shape of fruit etc., and was probably unimpressed with a fruit of a similar variety. It was definitely before I was six though.
