I recently watched this movie, and while it contained heart-drumming action, it left me thinking more about the message it was trying to get across (if indeed there was a message). I realize that people who aren't Christian may pin it down as an effort to evangelize and may scorn it or just ignore the fact that "the book" is the Bible (I wonder what other book would be used?). To me, it contained some pretty interesting and deep parallels with the Christian faith. I have no idea if the producers/directors are Christian, but they definitely hit home on a number of occasions, if not throughout the entire movie.
This movie actually gave me a better sense, or a greater appreciation, of the Bible. Seeing it dramatized like that, perhaps, helped my mind to better grasp the fact that the Bible is the living Word of the living God. It holds immense power, and it draws people. The movie furthermore emphasized following God's call to the very end, and really trusting in His promises and His perfect plan. Finally, there was the message of redemption, and of carrying out the Great Commission in a broken and fallen world.
There were many other details that struck me as true, such as the lines Eli said. Here are a couple:
Solara: What was it like before?
Eli: People had more than they needed, people didn't know what was precious and what wasn't, people threw away things they kill each other for now.
Eli (in a prayer): ...I fought the good fight, I finished the race, I kept the faith.
In any case, if you want to think a bit, I would recommend watching this movie. I warn that you might be a little offset by the violence, but there's not more of it than usual, I would say. Anyway....I'm still thinking over it.
