If there's been one earthly constant in my life, through all the times that I've moved, all the people I've met and left, even family members, it would probably be Kenny G.
His songs have played for me probably since I was a baby, and I remember that distinctive sax in all those long car rides traveling from one state to another, moving from one city to the next. I remember waking up to his songs on the weekends when my dad was in a good mood; his songs played at the wedding that started my dad and step-mom on their marriage. A marriage that has fallen apart. Even now, his songs are on my iTunes, and sometimes they catch me unawares (like now). Always, they bring back a feeling of loss, of nostalgia, sentimentality (indeed, one of his songs is even titled "Sentimental"), sorrow. But his songs also bring a sense of beauty. No music makes me hold and catch my breath like his.
Which is ironic because he can do circular breathing.
